Lambrusco: the story of the lively King of Reggio Emilia

Lambrusco, the semi-sparkling red, has been part of the Reggio Emilia region since ancient times. Apparently, ancient inhabitants of terramare settlements began to tame wild vines in the Bronze Age.
Its name “Lambrusco” comes from the Latin, vitis labrusca, a term the Romans used for the wild grape variety that produced sour fruits and used to grow on the edge of the countryside.

Over the centuries, the story of this semi-sparkling wine continued in the medieval court of Matilda of Tuscany, up until 1300 when a man from Bologna called Pier De Crescenzi suggested actually cultivating the wild “Vite Labrusca” in his agricultural treatise.
The years went by and we come to 1800 when – at inns and trattorias in Modena – Lambrusco was sold at three times the price of normal wine. It was often more expensive than an entire meal and was only served in bottles, never on draught!

Its very long history is therefore closely intertwined with its home region. In a glass of good Lambrusco, you can immediately sense the culture and tradition of its land and the people who have always made it.

From its original indistinguishable nature as a wild vine, it gained the dignified status of a wine-growing family which, thanks to its constant evolution, now includes various varieties of wine with 7 appellations: Lambrusco di Sorbara, Lambrusco Salamino di Santa Croce, Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro, Lambrusco di Modena, Lambrusco Reggiano, Lambrusco dei Colli di Scandiano e di Canossa, and Lambrusco dell’Emilia, each of which is connected to specific regional areas around Modena, Reggio Emilia, Parma and Mantua. Regions where this captivating wine goes perfectly with the traditional cuisine: semi-sparkling, fresh and lively, it is perfect with the typical flavourful, hearty and rich dishes of our region.

So let’s raise a glass and make a toast to Lambrusco, our ancient yet modern wine that combines a vibrant red colour with elegant bubbles.
